What’s in this unit and how does it work?

This unit contains a layer of charcoal encased in a media bag for phase 1 cleaning and a germicidal low-voltage ultraviolet lamp for phase 2 disinfection. Antimicrobial silver-embedded tubing carries the cleaned, disinfected water up to the fountain’s spout.

The media bag holds the carbon in place and eliminates carbon-dust building. Fill it with ¼ cup of activated carbon. Rinse the filled bag outside the housing (before you put the bag in) and then slip it in to the housing, folding the rest of the bag down on top. This carbon-filled bag captures shed hair and debris and removes chlorine, foul taste and odor from the water.

Now insert the UV light as shown in the pictures above, making sure the cable goes through the notch provided, using the small tube piece to protect the cable from squeezing to hard and screw the filter housing shut loosely.

The low-voltage germicidal ultraviolet lamp produces ultraviolet wavelengths that are lethal to microorganisms. Approximately 95% of the ultraviolet energy emitted is at 365-369 nanometers. This wavelength is in the region of maximum germicidal effectiveness and is highly lethal to virus, bacteria and mold spores. As a result, the microorganisms that pass through the filter housing are deactivated, preventing them from reproducing and rendering them harmless.
